My wife and I are new to the coupon world, learning as we go.

We were at K-Mart and they had their 12 count pop tarts on sale for 1.88 each and we had three .55 cent coupons. As we went through the check out line the cashier pulled a coupon off the pop tart box that was buy three boxes get $1.50 off. She then proceeded to scan our .55 cent coupons. And the system took the first two rejecting the third. So it went like this :

1) 1.88 - 55 cent coupon
2) 1.88 - 55 cent coupon
3) 1.88 - 1.50 coupon

Does this work on most items and at most stores or did we just hit a rare occurrence?
