Please bear with me on this one, I’ve gone over it many times in my head and I seem to get different results each time so I’m hoping that someone here can sort it out for me and clear up any confusion.

So, this week Target has Sobe Life Water on sale for 10 bottles for $10 ($1 bottle per dollar). Also if you buy 10 bottles in the same transaction, they will give you a $5 gift card. The first time I did this I bought 10 bottles for $10 and got a $5 gift card. OK so no big deal, but the second time I did it I bought 10 bottles for $10 and used the $5 gift card (from the first transaction), making my purchase only $5 total, then at the end of the transaction they gave me another $5 gift card.

At first I’m thinking ‘Hey this is like free merchandise because I’m only spending $5 on it (after the GC is applied), and I’m getting back another $5 when the transaction is completed’. Then later I thought that indeed it’s still costing me $5 to make this purchase because it’s almost like handing them the original $5 gift card and they hand it back to me, but I’m still spending $5 out of pocket. However at the same time I’m walking away with an active $5 gift card in my pocket when all is said in done.

Depending on how this pans out, this could be a really hot deal because after the second transaction you are essentially spending $5 for the 10 bottles and getting that $5 back in the form of a GC immediately after you spend it… Or maybe… ah my head is spinning, I give up.
